Focusing on the Future

1996 Bluestocking

Mary Baldwin College

Stauton Virginia 24401

MARTHA S. GRAFTON LIBRARY
MARY BALDWIN COLLEGE

Freshmen

What a year! Coming in as the the largest freshman class ever to attend Mary Baldwin College, the
Class of 1999 already had a tough road ahead. It was the end of one of the hottest summers and the
beginning of one of the roughest winters. Through it all, the freshmen made it with late night cocoa,
bonding sessions, and killer snowball fights on the field hockey field when there was nothing else to
do on campus.

The weather was not the only change freshmen endured, though. With the inagural class of the
Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership, the Class of 1999 would be changed forever. Those fort\ -
two women added an aspect that no other class before or after will ever possess.

Throughout all the changes, they became closer, and lifetime friends were made. Freshmen will
always look back on their first year away from home and remember learning from mistakes, enjoyin]
good times, and planning for the future. It was a great year. As Class of 1999 member Adrienne
Barnes said, "We still have three years of maturing to do, but we sure will have fun doing it!"

by Annie Saval '99 and Tiffany Richter '99

Freshman Katherine Grisdale takes time
out time out of her busy day to enjoy the
year's first picnic with a friend from home,
Clianda Hoffman. Time spent relaxing and
unwinding helped to bring the Freshman
Class closer. Many students found a great
way to lose some stress was to bond with their
hallmates.

Amy Charleston,
Allison Kelly.
Patti Foley, and Kim
Lockhart are sittin"
pretty in their brilliant
yellow orientation
shirts These shirts
made the orientation
staff easily recogniz-
able to freshmen and
aided in making the
introduction to college
less strenuous.

In a hurry to reg-
ister for classes.
many freshmen

camped out to beat the
crowds. Registration
began as early as mid-
night the night before
for some, and did not
end until after 10 am.
It was truly a drair
experience as Jenn.;^.
Vergne demonstrates
as she snags a nap in
Miller Chapel.

Apple Day

Taking advantage of an Apple Day
festivity, Melissa Paetz has her
characature drawn. Students could
go from station to station on the hill -
- choosing from bobbing for apples,
having their picture drawn, playing
games, or eating cotton candy. The
fun continued as a band played on the
lawn while students played in the
moonwalk.

On Apple Day Eve, Su-
san Major and Jessica
Charles take a trip to the
University of Virginia
to paint the Beta Bridge.
The painting of this
bridge signified the ot-
innouncement of
Apple Day to surround-
ing colleges. This an-
nouncement sends out
the word that the party
is at Mary Baldwin.

Suzy Tacaraya. Susan
Bollinger, and Jessica
Charles plant the Apple
Day tree. The annual
planting of the tree is a
Mary Baldw in tradition
that the sophomore class
officers tried to pre-
serve. Apple Day.
though known through!
the valley for the party-
ing, is one of MBC's
oldest traditions.

Participating in one the
games on the hill. Mary
Baldwin students play
tug of war. Tug of war
was not the only attrac-
tion on the hill that day.
Students were given the
chance to play other
games in the sun. listen
to a live band, and just
take the day off from
classes and studying.

Junior Dad's

Preparing for the
Junior Dad's cer-
emony, Julie Lucero,
Jen Hager. Marta
Gaiopin. Ritsuko
Sawada, Narsoko
Tsunematsu, Jenna
Smith. Aimee Aceto,
and Sara Morris were
all smiles. Junior
Dad's gave juniors a
chance to get dressed
up and take the town
by storm.

Have you ever seen
a father so proud?
Aimee Aceto. one of
Mary Baldwin's many
juniors, poses for the
camera with her dad.
Colonel Aceto, on Jun-
ior Dad's night. This
event represents a step-
ping stone into
seniorhood as each jun-
ior is presented with her
ring by her father.

T ulie Lucero. Jen
'^ Hager, Marta
Galopin. Jenna Smith.
Aimee Aceto. and Sara
Morris take time out
to record a memory
and say ciieese for the
camera before heading
out to Junior Dad's.
The Junior Dad"s cer-
emony, held at E.xpo
Land, provided a good
time for all that at-
tended and gave them
memories that will live
forever.

Dolled up for Jun-
ior Dad" S.Claire
Hilado smiles beauti-
fully for the camera as
she enjoys one of the
most important events
of her time at Mary
Baldwin. Junior
Dad's gave MBC
women the chance to
spend time with their

It was nearly three decades
ago, after a series of race
riots, that a commitment
began to use race-based programs to
improve the Uves of blacks. But in
1995-96 affirmative action plans be-
gan to get weaker. The Supreme
Court isued decisions making it harder
to justify giving minorities and
women preferences in the awarding

Mary Baldwin Moves Into
the Future

Mary Baldwin College has always been known for its commitment to excellence and its
constant struggle to instruct its students to uphold all of the qualities consistent with an
outstanding leader and citizen. This year, MBC took on another challege head first. This was
the first year for the Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership, and with VWIL came many
new changes to the face of MBC and its students. But VWIL was not the only element in MBC's
battle for excellence while moving into the future. The PEG program continues to flourish and
attract exceptional young women to Mary Baldwin each year. And other programs, such as
the Adult Degree Program and the MAT program, help to project MBC into the 21st century.
This commitment to excellence is what has Mary Baldwin College, and its students, focusing
on the future.

by Shannon Baylis

The VWIL program, represented by Color Guard members Ashley DiYorio, Trimble Bailey,
Michelle Payant, and Erin O'Brien, marked the beginning of a new era of of excellence for Mary
Baldwin College.

As the turn of the
century ap-
proaches, Mary
Baldwin College has
grabbed hold of tech-
nology. Many
Baldwin ladies were
found concentrating
on computer screens
in one of the many
computer labs on
campus.

At the beginning
of the 1995-
1996 school year, the

future of MBC shop-
pers was altered as a
bigger, better Wal-
Mart came to town.
The new "Super Cen-
ter" also had a
McDonalds, super-
market, and video
store.

Susanna Myers jumps into her new po-
sition as Chairwoman of the Honor
Council. She is just one of the women
chosen to help Mary Baldwin College be-
come a stronger, more tolerant community
in the future.

The Virginia Women's Institute for

Leadership

On August 22, 1995 Mary Baldwin set precedent as forty-two young
women arrived to start the first year of the Virginia Women's Institute for
Leadership. The new corp of cadets was welcomed by Dr. Brenda
Bryant, the director of VWIL, and hordes of media. They endured a quic
but thorough orientation, ending with a morning run through campus,
before they headed out on a four day wilderness trip. They returned to
Mary Baldwin College to begin another long journey that would be far
more strenuous. During the year, these young women managed to live
both military and civilian lives. After much opposition and criticism, thes(:
young women have managed to survive and succeed in their first year

The first female cadets

the top. Tired and sore,
these VWIL cadets still
beamed at the thought
of their conquest. The
tiring climb to the top of
VMI's own mountain
was only one of many
activities planned for
the cadets to constantly
challenge themselves.

After a successful
VWIL parade, cadets

and it reflected the
VWIL cadets' ability to
come together as one
corps.

PEG

The Program for the Exceptionally Gifted at Mary Baldwin College offers a tradi-
tional college curriculum to gifted young women one to four years before most stu-
dents begin at the vmiversity level. Currently, there are 50 PEG students from Fresh-
man to Senior classification at MBC. The PEG administration offices and students
have been located in Tullidge Hall since the program's beginning at MBC. However,
as of Fall 1996, PEG will occupy South Bailey.

Many PEGs are named to the Dean's or Honors list each semester, and there are
several PEGs who have achieved the distinction of Class Marshal or Honor Scholar.
Socially, PEG students are able leaders and interact well with their peers. The Mary
Baldwin chapters of Amnesty International and S.O.U.L.S. (Sisters Out Understand-
ing Loving Sisters) were founded by PEGs and are open to all MBC students. PEG
students may run for leadership positions at MBC, in addition to electing their own
House Presidents and Senators.

In closing, PEG wishes the MBC Class of 1996 the best of future success in all they
do. We especially congratvilate the PEG Seniors on their accomplishments through a.
their years at MBC. Good luck, Jenny, Jill, Jane, Emily, Anita, and Laura!

Learn from the past, live in the present, and focus on the future. Daily life at Mary Baldwin
will become part of the vast store of memories that each of us contains. The things we learned
about ourselves in these halls and on these hills have helped to mold us into the people we are.
Moving away from home and into a world of independence was hard for every student.
Leaving behind the toys of childhood and picking up the tools of the future left us all
questioning ourselves at one time or another. But with the support of friends and neighbors,
we each grew as individuals throughout the year. Whether it was a picnic on the hill in the
sunshine, a dance recital when you tried something new and your friends were there to back
you up, or the history that Mary Baldwin students made every day, MBC life became part of
us all as we focused on the future.

by Shannon Baylis

After half of the campus returned, MBC experienced the Blizzard of '96. Instead of going to
classes, MBC students tried sledding the giant hills on campus, drank hot cocoa served by the
dining hall after hours, and acquired many bruises on the ice that formed.

Theatre at MBC

The 1995-1996 season of the Fletcher Collins Theatre was a highly sue
cessful one. Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley was directed by Rick
Seyford and starred six cast members. This was the first play performe
for the 1995-96 season. Crimes was a humorous tale of three sisters ai
their elaborate family problems. Crimes was sold out for every perfor-
mance. Like Crimes of the Hear t. The Pirates of Penzance or the Slavd

of Duty by Gilbert and Sullivan was also sold out. The cast of Pirates
was an exceptionally large one, with 32 members - and they still needec
more men. For more on the year in drama, see the next page...

the play.

Relatively Speaking
had the audience roll-
ing on the floor. In this
scene Greg, played by
Patrick Bednarczy. pro-
tects Ginny (Ashley
Bennet) from her imagi-
nary husband. Patrick
and Ashley brought
much to the play, which
was directed by Terry
Southerington.

Fredrich, played
by Ben Elliot,
sings/yells at his
nanny who has made
a big mistake. The
nanny, who was
played by Kim
Cordes. accidentally
apprenticed him to a
pirate instead of a pi-
lot. This scene proved
to be an amusing point
in the play The Pirates
of Penzance.

Lighting up the Stage

The spring semester started off with a performance of A IVIidsummer
Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. Directed by Rick Seyford with j|
cast of 21 members, the play was an interesting adaptation of the origin!
script. Relatively Speaking , by Alan Ayckbourn and directed by Terry
Southeringthon, had a small cast of four but a large stage crew. For the|
one set change in the entire play, there were seven members of the set
crew and three prop people needed. The last play of the year, Agnes of
God , was directed by the guest director William Rough. This play was
performed during May Term and had a cast of three women.

All in all, it was an exciting year for the Mary Baldwin theater commu-
nity as they brought to life five distinct and interesting plays.

Fest O' Fools

The Executive Council, for the second year in a row, hosted Fest O'
Fools. The festivities took place the first weekend of March, with band
mixers on Friday and Saturday to help create an atmosphere of fun.
Students participated in medieval-style games on Saturday like human
bowling and jousting, just to name two of the activities offered. Fest O'
Fools provided students with a nice break from the stresses of everyday
MBC life, to sit back and have fun with friends. The funds made from
Fest O' Fools went to help the Executive Council complete their activitie
for the 95-96 school year.

Jennifer Lordan

Ryn Bruce and Kim
Cordes take time out
from a hard week to
participate in the joust-
ing event. FestO' Fools
weekend was a great
success because of the
good music, fun day-
time festivities and the
good times had by Mary
Baldwin students and
their friends.

Anita Blanco and
Joanna Vickery enclose
another poor victim into
the ball for human bowl-
ing. This was just one
of the many fun events
at Mary Baldwin dur-
ing Saturday's festivi-
ties. All this fun was
topped off by another
great mixer Saturday
night.

ssica Ryder and a friend admit guests into the
stO' Fools Mixer. The Fest O" Fools mixers and
hirt sales were used as fundraisers for the Hxeeu-
e Couneil. T-shirts were sold for $ 1 2 and they
•nt fast. The Exeeuti ve Couneil offered a special
al to students and their guests who wanted to
end all the events by selling weekend passes for
. A good time was had by all and the students
II forever have their shirts as a memento of this
1 weekend.

Kendra Nelson, Megan Robinson, Erin Reavis and
Kristin Ohleger dance the Macarena. a Latin
American line dance, during the festivities on Fest
O' Fools weekend. Human bowling and jousting
were among the other events that students and their
guests could participate in.

Schmidt, Melissa Leecy
and Hunter Mackeyjam

mixer. This first week-
end in March brought
an atmosphere of fun
and good times to all
who attended. The
bands that came to Mary
Baldwin added to the
good times with their
iireat music.

A Mary Baldwin stu-
dent struts her stuff

the Fest O" Fools mixer.
Everyone who attended
the mixers enjoyed great
music and fun while
hanging out with great

Remember...

-The first day of the first year of the first time in your Hfe you started your journey to gettin
old;

-The roommates, the fears, the tears, the nerves, setting up the room, taking it apart and
then rearranging it all over again;
-The first guy who caught your eye, that same guy who you will still remember as your firs
college crush;

-Attempting to keep in touch with high school friends, and succeeding until you realized
what a phone bill REALLY meant;

-Promising to never change, but then realizing that's an impossible promise to keep when
high school has passed and you've moved on;

-Those first friends you shared your fears with, who soon became acquaintances;
-Those nieghbors and classmates, who ended up becoming your closest friends;
-Holding back the tears on those days when you just wanted to be home again, to feel safe
again;

-Those days you felt you couldn't relate to ANYONE, you felt you had no place, and just
calling home would make it worse;

-Those bonding nights, when you never felt closer to a certain person, and how that close-
ness creates ties that never die;

-How you never realized the importance of family, until you didn't see them everyday;
-Telling friends the deepest secrets of your life, and knowing they'd remain secrets;
-The craziness of the dorm, getting sudden bursts of energy and looking for people, even
total strangers, to harass;

-Pulling all nighters, and never thinking they were as bad as they sounded until you actu-
ally lived through one;

-When your closet stretched throughout the whole floor and you never had to worry about
a lack of clothes anymore;

-How over breaks you had the chance to step back and really see the friends you made an
the memories shared, and you were satisfied;
-Thinking HOW MUCH your life has changed in just months;
-The times, never forget them, even the little ones can hold the greatest meaning;
-To never lose touch with those friends you've made here at college, because you have all
changed and grown enormously together, and that is something very sacred to be shared;
-You are only here for a short while, the time flies before you realize it, so make it last, mak
it memorable, make it the best time of your life, and make the best memories that you can
carry with you for the rest of your days;

-This doesn't last forever so never let a day go by without living it to it's fullest;
-To never let a day go by without a laugh;
-The laughs, let them echo in the back of your mind;

-To love your friends, whether they come, go, love you or hurt you, NEVER let anyone go;
-AND ALWAYS REMEMBER, WHEN YOU LEAVE HERe IN FOUR YEARS YOU ARE
LEAVING WITH MUCH MORE THAN YOU WALKED IN HERe WITH.

Classes at MBC

Where would we have been without our classes to keep us occupied during the time between
weekends? The many hours, hard work, and dedication that Mary Baldwin students gave to
each of their classes is what made our school community as strong as it was. The many
opportunities that MBC had to offer, such as small classes and the ability to become a face and
not just a number, were what made Mary Baldwin appealing to the many students who
applied for admission each year. Whether it be Orientation to College or Senior Seminar,
students learned about the world around them and the personal limits each student has.
Through it all, Mary Baldwin remained dedicated to its goal of educating each student to the
fullest and creating leaders out of all MBC women. This dedication to excellence is what
propelled Mary Baldwin from a successful present into a successful future.

Many of MBC's

cal education classes
such as tennis.

Keeping an eye on the

Dedication in practice
was necessary for a
successful Softball

The friendly rivalry
between students and
professors is what
ma kes MBC seem like
a big family.

What would a school be without a great faculty? In an effort to move into the future, Mary
Baldwin acquired new professors this year, among them Dr. Robert Reich, Communications,
and Coach Donna Miller, Physical Education and Tennis Team Coach. With the added
professors to the faculty, the resources students had to draw on increased, giving students the
opportunity to learn more than ever before.

Whether it be a faculty advisor or a professor seen three times a week, faculty became a major
part of every MBC student's life. From exams to advice, and everything in between, it was
always possible to see a student in a professor's office somewhere. The close bond between
faculty and students was what made the Mary Baldwin experience so much more special.

^ 'lay in' Hard

A good leader is well rounded, and must be the best, not only academically and intellectually,
but physically as well. Mary Baldwin students, focusing on becoming better leaders in the
future, took the challenge and changed the face of MBC sports this year. From the Soccer team
winning games, to the Volleyball and Tennis teams bringing home division titles, it was an
exciting year for all who supported Mary Baldwin sports. The Field Hockey and Lacrosse
teams shone on the field, and the Basketball team ruled supreme on the courts. The Swimming
team went to division championships during Mid-Winter Break, and brought home a title of
its own. And who could forget the small but hard working Fencing team, who competed in
the midst of blizzards. All in all, it was a successful year, one that reflected a commitment to
the present and a focus on the future.

Volleyball

Mary Baldwin's Volleyball
team began the year with a strong
mix of players. All its members
were experienced and ready to
work towards a victory for Bald-
win.

Pamela Owens, one of the
many freshmen composing the
team, explained, "it took time to
get used to playing with people
and learn[ing] to back each other
up. But by the end of the season
and the conference [the team was
looking pretty good."

The Mary Baldwin Volleyball
team played well all season and
competed at the new conference
tournament in the fall. They came
out on top and won the competi-
tion. It is the first time Mary
Baldwin's Volleyball team has
won a tournament! Rigorous
practice and conditioning along
with a dedicated coach helped to
bring the team together success-
fully and they are looking for-
ward to another great season next
year.

Field Hockey

What a season! The Fighting
Squirrels did a great job defend-
ing Mary Baldwin. With Lou
Moore coaching her heart out,
the team worked hard and played
harder. The team accomplished
many goals including a record of
ten wins and seven losses. Next
season with all but two of its mem-
bers coming back.

the team plans on accomplishing
many more of its goals. When
asked if there were any secrets to
the team's success, Erin Smith
and Jennifer Edwards said in
unison, "Team unity was the key
to our success." Team unity
seems to be the success story to
many of the teams here at Mary
Baldwin College.

Lacrosse

What does it take to excell at la-
crosse? According to team mem-
ber Kristi Blyer, speed was a must,
among other things. Mary
Baldwin's Lacrosse team worked
hard to develop skills such as
stick control, endurance, and
team communication in order to
accomplish their goal of victory.
Fach team member needed to be
willing to learn from others in
order for the team to succeed.

Upperclass women became a
large part of the learning process
as they passed on helpful hints to
their younger teammates. The
players developed friendships,
patience, and skill through physi-
cal exertion, keeping mental and
physical health. Though it may
not have been reflected in the
scores, the Lacrosse team defi-
nitely improved this year, on and
off the field.

Soccer

With a coach like Jelisa
Coltrane, who could not improve?
Even though the soccer team did
not have an impeccable record
this season, they did do better
than the team in past years. The
team consisted of mostly
underclasswomen, one junior,
and one senior who all worked
very closely to build great team
spirit. The season started at the

end of August and ran until the
end of October. This gave Coach
Coltrane and the team time to
im.prove and make friendships
that will last a life time. The team
played against colleges such as
Hollins, Sweet Briar, Randolph-
Macon, Trinity, Hood, and Wells.

their record.

Tennis

Toiimworkand Friendship. Tliese
are the two elements needed for a
successful season in any sport,
and the Mary Baldwin tennis
team was no exception. No mat-
ter how many wins or losses,
knowing that each team member
played to her potential was the
most important factor. Another
important factor in the Tennis
team's victories was the fact that
working together did not end on

the court. Close friendships were
developed that will last a life-
time. These friendships helped
give each individual player the
extra confidence needed for each
match. This was most evident as
the Mary Baldwin Tennis team
brought home first place in the
AWCC Tennis Tournament,
hosted on the MBC courts.

player watches as the ball flies

Swimming

The Mary Baldwin Swim team
had a great year. Practices were
held from 6:30 to 8:30 - in the
morning - on a daily basis during
the week. The team said, how-
ever, that getting up early was a
small sacrifice to pay in order to
win meets and have fun. Coach
Bob Couch pushed his swimmers
to do their best, and with his di-
rection and their drive, the Swim
team had a very successful year.

Winning several of their meets,
the Swim team ranked very high
in the championships. It seemed
that their cheer - KBSH - Kick
Butt, Swim Hard is exactly what
they did. When members weren't
swimming, some of them could
be heard singing their Cookie
Monster Cheer - "We're not bad,
we're not cheap, we'll ride over
you like a Cherokee jeep."

Fencing

Our season was unusually short
because of two blizzards and the
inability to travel in snow. Due to
this, we had only two pre-tour-
nament matches this year. A high-
light of our season was when we
beat Virginia Tech 12 bouts to 4
bouts. This year all schools, with
the exception of JMU and HoUins
College, now have club status.
This means that teams (except
during tournament play) can be

co-educational and may also in-
clude alumnae and current mem-
bers of the faculty.
At the tournaments, our begin-
ners were fencing 3rd and 4th
year fencers Because fencing is
like chess, our opponents had
more strategy up their sleeves
than we did. Our students had a
wonderful time, fenced a lot,
learned much, and fenced very
well. I was proud of them,

Basketball

Mary Baldwin's Basketball sea-
son got off to a rough start, but
that didn't hold the team back.
They had lots of fun from the
beginning, learning from each
otheras they went along. A large
portion of the team of fifteen
members was underclasswomen.
The young team played well as a
unit. They worked together at
least five times a week, either
playing games or in rigorous

practice. Coach Moore coached
this team with as much enthusi-
asm as she coached Field Hockey
and Lacrosse, making her one of
the most energetic people on cam-
pus. Like all other sports teams
here at MBC, the squirrels gave
each of the games their all and
played with pride.

given many opportuni-

opportunities allowed
students to grow not

May Term

May Term was what students made of it. This year
there were many opportunities to be active on campus
after classes. Students were also involved in trips and
education off campus. This year, trips to England, Rus
sia, Peru, and Australia were open to adventurous
students with a passport. Once abroad, the MBC
women were required to take a class during the day
and attended cultural events in the evenings.

Back at home, for those who stayed on campus dur
ing the '96 May Term, many activities such as Thurs
days on the terrace, a Faculty/Student softball game,
Karaoke nights. Wall Climbing in the PAC, and the May
Term play Agnes of God, helped keep students busy.

At Mary Baldwin, one of the fundamental principles has always been opportunity. The
opportunity to participate in many different activities was certainly present on campus this
year. Whether it was the celebration of being recognized as the Number One Liberal Arts
College in the South, press conferences conducted by the illustrious administration, or chances
for the students to come together and learn about each other, there was always something
taking place on campus for students to get involved in. Because of this, Baldwin women spent
the year working together to strengthen our community. The opportunities we had here
helped us to focus on the future, to a world full of opportunities.

for working with me - 1 know it hasn't always been easy -
and I praise all of you for the dedication you have dem-
onstrated. You should be proud of yourselves. Next
year, let's win an award.
-Shannon Baylis, Editor-in-Chief

Hanging On...A constant reminder of Mary Baldwin's mascot
Gladys, this squirrel hangs on as it runs up the tree. Though the
year proved to be difficult for many students, Mary Baldwin hung in
through snowstorms, community tension, and an influx of the medi;
to represent the dignity and honor that is Mary Baldwin. This
commitment to excellence helped the MBC community to focus on
the future.

(jT" he staff of the 1995-1996 Bluestocking would like to dedicate this yearbook to our Jostens Publishing representative,
*^ Eddie Huff. Without Eddie's constant encouragement and his belief that we could overcome all the obstacles we
faced, this book would not have been possible. We extend our most heartfelt thanks to Eddie Huff and all those at Jostens
Publishing. The staff would also like to thank our advisor, Crista Cabe, for her support and advice and our new advisor Dr.
Robert Reich for agreeing to work with us in the coming year. We look forward to a year full of learning experiences and a
great book.
